Medical Missions

The Leading Cause of Blindness

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 20 million people are currently impacted by this treatable condition, though barriers exist in many parts of the world that prevent proper treatment.

Mission trips sponsored by organizations such as Vision Outreach International provide much-needed services in areas where blindness from cataracts is common. Not only does this allow volunteer surgeons to help prevent sight loss for numerous people, but it also prevents additional burdens from being placed on these communities by reducing special care required by individual members. Dr. Brooks is honored to have been able to participate in this noble endeavor.

In July 2017, Dr. Dain Brooks had the privilege of traveling to Siliguri, India, with his wife Staci and daughter Eleise (pictured, along with one of the many patients he was able to help restore sight for), to perform cataract surgery on indigent patients in the region. The mission, sponsored by SEE International, provided Dr. Brooks another opportunity to serve and utilize his surgical gift to restore sight to people who otherwise do not have access to care.

In March of 2014, board-certified ophthalmologist Dain B. Brooks joined two other surgeons on a mission trip to Ecuador. Sponsored by Vision Outreach International, this trip took Dr. Brooks to San Lorenzo, a farming and ranching community close to the Colombian border. There Dr. Brooks and fellow eye surgeons performed cataract surgery on more than 75 eyes, helping restore vision for people who would have otherwise been left to go blind.

Dr. Brooks believes that mission trips are vital for people in underprivileged parts of the world and is humbled by the opportunity to give the gift of sight to those in need.

Dr. Brooks traveled to a remote section of Mexico to provide cataract surgery to a very poor population. While there, he helped restore vision to people who not only could not ever afford the care, but had no access to an ophthalmologist in their region.
