Do Vitamin E Reduce Risks for Cataract Development?

Risk of Cataract developmentIt has long been believed that vitamin E was essential for reducing the risks of cataract development – and that may certainly still be the case for women, but a study conducted on 11,267 males over the age of 50 has found that increased vitamin E had no significant impact on cataract development in men.

The study, conducted by researchers from Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, identified 389 cases of cataracts among participants over a 5 ½ year period. Men taking a vitamin E supplement accounted for 197 of those cases. Men taking a placebo accounted for 194. These nearly identical numbers indicate to the study’s authors that vitamin E may not be effective at preventing the development of cataracts.
