Epiretinal Membranes

Macular PuckersAn Epiretinal membrane is a layer of scar tissue caused by changes to the vitreous humor. Also known as “macular puckers,” epiretinal membranes can contract, pulling on the macula and leading to vision disruptions when left untreated. This condition is not typically related to other eye diseases and can occur even in individuals with otherwise healthy vision.

While sometimes confused with macular degeneration, epiretinal membranes do not result in a complete loss of vision. Instead, this condition impacts the central vision alone, producing symptoms such as blurring or distortion. In many cases, epiretinal membranes produce no symptoms at all.

If you are experiencing vision disruptions brought about by epiretinal membranes, Plano eye doctor Dain Brooks can discuss treatment options. However, treatment is not necessary when a membrane is not impacting vision. What is best for your overall visual health will be based on your particular needs and determined during your appointment with Dr. Brooks.

If you are experiencing changes in your vision, please contact Brooks Eye Associates today. Based in Plano, our eye doctor serves Dallas, Frisco, and surrounding areas of Texas.
