Exfoliation Syndrome

Exfoliation syndrome treatmentExfoliation syndrome is an eye condition that becomes more likely with age. Marked by tiny flakes comprised of pigment and other materials from the iris, this syndrome clogs the trabecular meshwork – the area of the eye responsible for draining the aqueous humor – increasing risks for glaucoma up to six times.

Exfoliation syndrome is a known risk factor for glaucoma and retinal vein occlusion. It is also known to increase the risk of cataracts and cause potential complications with cataract surgery.  Not everyone with exfoliation syndrome will experience these issues, but Dallas eye surgeon Dr. Dain Brooks may suggest you visit your optometrist with greater frequency if you are diagnosed with this particular disorder.

Considerations Prior to Cataract Surgery

Exfoliation syndrome can increase risks for capsular rupture, zonular dialysis, and vitreous loss, making it important that Dr. Brooks be made aware of the condition prior to your cataract surgery. Dr. Brooks works closely with several area optometrists to ensure patients receive the safest and most effective treatment possible, and will carefully review your records prior to suggesting any procedure.

While there is no guarantee against complications, we utilize advanced cataract surgery technology to minimize risks and help ensure a safe and effective procedure. Dr. Brooks would be happy to discuss this with you in greater detail during your cataract surgery consultation.

If you are looking for a cataract surgeon in Dallas, Plano, Frisco, or surrounding areas of Texas, please contact Brooks Eye Associates to schedule your consultation with our board-certified ophthalmologist.
