How to Prevent Cataracts
While there isn’t a definitive way to prevent cataracts, there are several recommendations that may be helpful. Cataracts form in 50% of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 and 70% of Americans that are 75 and older. A cataract is a clouding in the lens of your eye that hinders light from properly passing through your retina.
Because of this clouding, your vision can become blurred, faded, and dim and can eventually lead to blindness. Cataract surgery can be performed in order to remove the blurred lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Our team offers a variety of lens implants that can be used to rectify a cataract.
While cataract surgery is effective at correcting the problem, there may be ways to increase the overall health of your eyes which may help to prevent cataracts.
Some ways to maintain the overall health of your eyes include:
- Regular eye exams
- Don’t smoke
- Don’t drink alcohol in excess
- A healthy diet
- A healthy weight
- Protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays
Keeping yourself healthy overall and protecting your eyes from the sun may be helpful in reducing your risk for cataracts.
