What to Expect from LASIK Recovery

What to expect from lasik recoveryOnce you are cleared to go home after LASIK eye surgery, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you, since you won’t be able to drive yet yourself. Dr. Brooks will provide you with protective sunglasses to wear for the first few days after your procedure, and shields to prevent any unconscious eye-rubbing while you’re sleeping. He may also provide you with antibiotic eye drops to improve healing.

It’s best to rest your eyes as much as possible after arriving home. Your eyes may look red or bloodshot, and you may notice some mild itching or a burning sensation. All of these symptoms are normal side effects of LASIK and will fade over time. If needed, Dr. Brooks can prescribe a mild pain reliever.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, even though you may want to because of itching. If you do so, you risk displacing the delicate corneal flap that needs to heal in place.

Most of our LASIK patients are happy with their vision immediately, and feel back to normal the first day after surgery. Others need to wait a few more days before noticing improvement. As your eyes continue to heal, your eyesight will get progressively better.
