Brooks Eye Associates’ Dr. Connor Smith recently embarked on a mission trip to Tecate, Mexico, with Vision Outreach International to provide cataract surgery to those in need. This journey was a testament to the life-changing impact of cataract surgery and a profound demonstration of how medical professionals can try to fill in the cracks of healthcare access for underserved communities.
Dr. Smith, a trusted LASIK surgeon and glaucoma specialist at Brooks Eye Associates, joined Vision Outreach International for this impactful mission. Together, they served patients in need from Tecate and beyond, including individuals traveling from as far as Baja, California. Over three days, Dr. Smith performed 25 manual small incision cataract surgeries. Each surgery was a step toward restoring vision and transforming lives.
“Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, and there is a great need for this surgery,” said Dr. Smith. “Such a straightforward treatment can drastically change the course of a person’s life.”
Even though cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries in the world, we cannot overstate the impact of restoring sight. For many patients, the ability to see again opens up a world of possibilities, from returning to work to engaging more fully with family and community life. Dr. Smith received a poignant reminder of the difference that skilled and compassionate medical care can make every time he saw the smiles on his patients’ faces.
Dr. Smith’s recent mission trip to Tecate is just one chapter in a lifelong story of service and dedication to improving global eye health. As he continues his work at Brooks Eye Associates, he remains deeply committed to extending his reach and impact beyond the clinic. His experiences in Tecate serve as a powerful reminder of the profound difference one person can make in the lives of many.
