Types of Eye Diseases

There are many different types of eye diseases, but some of the most frequent problems we help patients with include:

  • Macular degeneration – Damage to the retina that results in gradual vision loss in the center of your vision (called the macula).
  • Diabetic retinopathy – Abnormal changes in the retina’s blood vessels causing them to leak fluid and the retina to swell.
  • Blepharitis – A swelling or inflammation of the eyelids causing eye irritation.
  • Retinal detachment – A major eye disorder that involves the retina detaching from its underlying layer of supportive tissue. If you are seeing floaters and flashes, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency that can quickly lead to blindness.

We also treat ocular surface diseases: disorders on the cornea’s surface that can affect your visual acuity and quality of life. Dry eye syndrome is the most common ocular surface disease that we see. Other disorders include ocular rosaceous, corneal scarring, allergies, chemical, and thermal burns, and immunological conditions.
