What is a Secondary Cataract?

What is Secondary Cataract?

Posterior capsule opacity often referred to as “secondary cataract,” occurs when a hazy membrane forms behind the artificial lens placed during cataract surgery. Secondary cataracts are rare – occurring in only about 10% of all cataract patients nationally – and will not lead to the formation of an actual cataract. Treatment for this condition does not require additional incisions and can typically be completed in a single office visit.

If you have had cataract surgery and are still experiencing vision difficulties, please call Dallas cataract surgeon Dr. Dain Brooks at (972) 736-9347 to schedule an appointment today.

Symptoms of Secondary Cataract

Cataract symptoms and those related to posterior capsule opacity are often very similar. These may include:

  • Halos and glares around lights
  • Diminished color sensitivity
  • Difficulties seeing at night
  • Blurred or hazy vision

As with cataracts, these symptoms can begin mildly and progress over time. If you have experienced any of these symptoms following your cataract surgery, Dr. Brooks would be happy to meet with you to assess your vision and determine if additional treatment is necessary.

To schedule an appointment, please contact Brooks Eye Associates online or by calling (972) 736-9347 today. Our cataract surgeon serves Plano, Frisco, and all surrounding areas of Texas from our convenient Dallas location.
