Toric Lens Implants in Plano, TX

Toric IOLsToric lens implants are advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in cataract surgery that are uniquely designed to correct astigmatism. Around 40% of patients with cataracts also have a significant degree of astigmatism. If your vision has been blurry all your life because of astigmatism, Toric IOL’s can provide you with the gift of clear, sharp, stable vision for the first time.

How Do Toric IOLs Work?

Astigmatism occurs when your eye has an oblong shape (like a football) instead of the ideal spherical shape (like a baseball). This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on your retina; instead of coming to a single point, light instead focuses at multiple points at the back of your eye, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.

Toric IOLs work by directing the light that enters your eye, ensuring it focuses in one location instead of several. There are currently three FDA-approved Toric lens implants on the market: Trulign®, TECNIS®, and AcrySof®.

TRULIGN™ Toric IOL

The TRULIGN™ Toric IOL is the first accommodating lens on the market that also offers astigmatism correction. FDA-approved as of May 2013, TRULIGN™ is designed to provide:

  • A broader range of vision, similar to the Crystalens®
  • Excellent acuity and brightness for night-time driving
  • Reduced glare and halos at night
  • Advanced aspheric optics

AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL

The AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL comes with many of its own advantages, including:

  • Improved vision in low-light environments
  • Aspheric surface to reduce night vision distortions
  • Made of a highly biocompatible material
  • Filters out harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays

The right lens implant for you will depend on the results of a thorough eye examination. Dr. Brooks can discuss each lens type in more detail during your appointment to determine which lens option is best for you.

Treatments for Astigmatism in Cataract Patients

Fortunately, Dr. Brooks can correct your Astigmatism at the same time he is performing your cataract procedure. Specially designed Toric IOLs are now available that can permanently correct Astigmatism. These lenses are designed with a specific shape that counterbalances the irregularity that causes the Astigmatism. Thanks to their unique shape, Toric IOLs are designed to refocus light rays as they pass through the lens and position them properly and in focus on the retina. The result is the correction of your astigmatism and complete restoration of your distance vision.

Dr. Brooks can also correct your Astigmatism using a Femtosecond laser during your procedure, which can be used in patients with or without a Toric IOL. For patients with only mild Astigmatism, Dr. Brooks can surgically correct it using Limbal Relaxing Incisions during your procedure.
