What are the Risk Factors for Cataracts?

Risk of CataractsAge is one of the biggest risk factors for the development of cataracts. This is particularly true if you have a family history of cataracts or an existing medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Other risk factors for cataracts include:

  • Previous eye injury, inflammation, or surgery
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol

Medical treatments including corticosteroid use and ionizing radiation used for x-rays and cancer treatment also increase risks for cataracts.
